A church provides a safe haven for the community, where people can gather to express thanks for their successes and pray that they continue. For many, a church’s traditional roots provide a sense a comfort and ease during a tough time. And there’s nothing more traditional at a church than stained glass windows, depicting biblical scenes in an array of colors that have been kissed by the sun. Many priests and pastors take pride in these masterpieces, which can cost anywhere from $100 to over $2,000 per square foot.
Because of the high cost (many churches own hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of stained glass), churches should do everything in their power to protect their precious stained glass windows. The Stained Glass Association of America (SGAA) recommends installing an exterior glazing of one-quarter inch safety glass or acrylic to protect windows from vandals and the elements. It’s also a good idea to encourage airflow between the window and the glazing by installing screened vents at the top and bottom.
Stained glass windows should be regularly inspected for any signs of cracking, buckling, bulging or sagging frames. Fixing any issues immediately helps keep the artwork in top shape for generations to come.
Many basic church insurance policies limit stained glass coverage to $250 per pane. But often, a church’s stained glass is worth much more and additional coverage is needed. In order to determine how much coverage to buy, revisit the paperwork that details the original cost of the windows from the artist and/or studio that created and installed them. It’s also recommended that you have the windows appraised by a stained glass professional, who can account for the aesthetic and historical value, in order to get an accurate estimate of what they’re currently worth.
The most comprehensive policy will cover the full replacement value of all stained glass windows. Your independent agent will search for the right policy so your church can have the protection it deserves for its prized assets.
